I’ve been writing about home bakers for so long that some of them have already spun off their initial businesses into something else. I first wrote about Cheryl Lim and her exceptional Walnut Tart back in 2010. Back then, her business was called Dragonfly Desserts (now defunct) but fast forward four years and it’s transformed into Whisk. “[It’s called so] because almost everything we do can be “whisked” together,” she chuckles.
Whisk is a purveyor of high quality, all natural salad dressings, dips, sauces, jams, and marmalades: pourables, dippables, spreadables – incredible edibles all. From the classic favorites such as Soy Ginger Dressing and Spinach & Artichoke Dip to the imaginatively conceived Jalapeño & Corn Salsa and Tomato Lemon Marmalade, Whisk’s selections are meant for mindful savoring.
The Raspberry Vinaigrette is one of the best I try locally. A full-bodied fruitiness and lingering sweetness surrenders to a surprise peppery kick at tail’s end.
The Asian Dressing is incredibly viscous and must be coaxed out of the bottle. I prefer using this as a dipping sauce, it’s a good alternative to mayo and suitable for fried chicken, sushi rolls, and egg salad sandwiches. I like using the Soy Ginger Dressing as a marinade and glaze for steamed fish. Whisk’s labeling is helpful and impressively thought out: serving suggestions, ingredient lists, contact information, and best-before dates. It’s certainly something other businesses can emulate.
Cheryl runs Whisk with her business partner Czarina Yu. I’m told that the business was borne of an inability to find good dressings and dips. “We believe that sauces are an integral part of cooking as it can make or break the dish,” Cheryl affirms. “And our products are homemade, so they’re all natural,” adding, “we always think of ways to put a twist to a classic like our latest creation, the Strawberry Basil Jam.” I avoid jam because most are almost always temple-achingly sweet. But this one from Whisk is lush and chunky and possesses a deep scarlet hue. The strawberry flavor shines through riding on just a pucker of sweetness and a pop of basil and black pepper at the end. Brilliant.
When you order from Whisk, ask them about customizing your own gift sets, and check out their add-ons like the Whisk Salad Spoon & Fork set (seen above), melba toasts, and salad croutons.
