It seems that I have a chocolate godsister who plies me with chocolate and keeps my sugar coffers a-brimming. Aside from those who know that I know her, she will forever remain nameless in this blog, for obvious reasons. She’s the one who gave me the Royce’ milk chocolates which I featured a few weeks ago. On a recent trip to Italy, she gave me some chocolates as well. How I love her.
Several of the comments that I received in the above post mentioned Royce’ chocolate-covered potato chips. And guess what my chocolate godsister (bless her sweet, sweet heart!) gave me next?
You got it: Royce’ chocolate-covered potato chips.
Labeled as Royce’ Potato Chips Chocolate, this unique treat comes in a large plastic bag, its top sealed firmly. Wrapper instructions behoove the eater to store the bon bons under 25°C, if there are any left to store, that is.
Once the bag was open, I buried my nose into its inner depths and breathed in a deep bouquet of chocolate and salt. Transporting. Sweet and salty is a flavor combination that’s been used with much success in European and American confections and desserts ”“ think salty caramel candies and chocolate cookies sprinkled with fleur de del, even sweet and salty sampaloc (tamarind). Taste buds on the tip of the tongue detect sugar, while the side taste buds detect salt. This tasty tandem of salty and sweet is demure yet flirtatious, a librarian in red stilettos.
Only one side is covered in chocolate — tell me, how do they do that?! The potato chip itself is ridged, all the better for the chocolate to ooze its way down and harden into a thick glossy coat. Once its smell overwhelms my senses, I am powerless as if in a spell. I take a bite: crrrunch! a jolt of salt, then my tongue is immersed in the coolness of light chocolate.
I better hide this bag from my Bin.
