Now imagine eating some of that steak. Feeling its juices gush onto your tongue, you find yourself delighting in the varied textures of the steak as you chew and the surprise taste of the marbled fat. Suddenly, your heart begins to beat just a little bit faster, just a little bit louder. Now take a spoonful of that crème brulee. Feel it course languorously down your throat, leaving a silky trail. It coats your mouth with its ethereal mixture of sugar and cream. You begin to feel like you’ve been drugged since you can swear that your muscles have relaxed and all you can think of is repeating this gastronomic experience.
Okay, now wake up.
Of course that was a highly romanticized view of the eating experience. You may even think that people who view eating as some sort of erotic experience must be sick in the head. I mean after all, food is really just meant to nourish, like eating to live, right? Wrong, hotshot. If everyone thought that way, then we would all be subsisting on root crops and some kind of fake meat thrown in to satisfy our daily protein requirement. My, what a pitiful thought.
Most people take food for granted. They never stop to really see what’s on their plate. I mean, look at your food. Have you never been rendered helpless by the smell emanating from a loaf of freshly baked homemade bread? Has your mouth not watered at the sheer redness of plump strawberries glistening with droplets of water or the colorful balance of a tossed salad? Food is beautiful ”“ one true example of beauty in its finest, purest form. And that beauty is art.
Eating is one of the few things wherein all five senses are simultaneously being exercised, and it is something that goes way beyond just taste. The act of eating sharpens our senses and makes us more aware of ourselves: Hear the sizzle of oil coming into contact with a hot pan, smell the intermingling fragrances of tomatoes, onions, and garlic, and the satisfying sssshhh announcing the addition of some liquid. Now see that sauce being poured over some piping hot al dente spaghetti noodles. Taste the various announcements of flavors that this pasta dish offers and touch the crusty roll that you use to wipe up the last of that exquisite sauce. If you’re having a problem relating to all of this, then you’re probably one of those people who thinks that there’s only one type of adobo or think that all cheesecakes are gelatinous in texture. I adore food, and I rightly adore fellow food lovers like myself. The most exciting and interesting people I know love food and would drive long distances just to fulfill a craving. People like us get excited over a slice of the most scrumptious lemon cake made with real lemons or a sizzling plate of crunchy sizzling sisig drained of all excess oil. Give a girl a good meal and she’ll be more than willing to do whatever you want after the meal. While other women may think that having dessert is better than having sex, a divine dessert will lead to good sex. Food is seduction. It’s all a matter of attitude.
