Do you remember the salad bar of Wendy’s in the 90s? It was where Pinoys pushed the boundaries of balance by constructing teetering towers of power on a platter that wasn’t designed for such architectural feats. I’ve got salad on the brain after receiving an email from a DCF reader: “Was wondering if you ever put out a list of best salads? I’m always thinking of where to order a good salad in my attempt to eat healthy. I usually go to Cyma or Apt 1B for their Caesar salad but getting kinda bored of these choices already.”
I’m not a fan of salads simply because the ones I like can’t possibly be healthy. I love La Copa’s Caesar Salad and the aforementioned Cyma’s Roka Insalata, which some would say is the best salad in Manila. But these salads are creamy and sweet and loaded with oil and sugar. When I want a salad, I’ll make one for myself at home with raw vegetables and no dressing. Boring as all got out but healthy as hell. When I go out to eat, eating healthy is not a top priority. A restaurant meal is a luxury I treat myself to on my cheat days because for the majority of the week, I prepare my own meals, salads included.
But for those of us who don’t have a choice and when you find yourself in a restaurant wanting to eat a little healthier, salads are a terrific option. And if creamy dressings and caramelized walnuts are going to help you get your daily serving of fruits and veg in, then all the better.
So tell me, where do you get a good salad?
