Christmas in August? Sort of.
Note: M.I.Y.O. Monday stands for Make It Your Own Monday, a question thrown out to DCF readers every Monday to jumpstart the week with lively interaction. I also welcome questions and suggestions for future MIYO Mondays. Email me.
I’ll be holding one last event later this year and, without giving away too many details just yet, I’d like to ask for your help in planning it. It’s an event patterned closely after the 6th Anniversary Party of Dessert Comes First held this past April — but with a twist. I get bored easily and thus, my events can never be clones of one another.
For those who’ve been reading Dessert Comes First for a considerable amount of time, you know how much I champion the home baker and our local food purveyors. I’ve mentioned many times how strongly I believe that the best desserts and the highest quality food comes from these people. The ones I’ve featured on DCF have become my friends and I continue to track their rising stars, ever proud of their success.
Having said that, I’m always on the lookout for new home bakers, new food purveyors — people who put passion and originality into what they offer.
So, to make my upcoming food event more representative of Manila’s dynamic food scene, tell me DCF readers:
Is there a home baker or food purveyor I should be checking out?
Whose desserts have you been enjoying? Whose products have you been buying and eating? Is it that baker I’ve heard about who makes maple cupcakes frosted with maple icing topped with caramelized bacon bits? Or what about that man who stuffs an entire liempo with lemongrass and whole garlic heads and roasts it a la Cebu-lechon style? If you’re eating it, I want to know about it, both the sweet and savory stuff. We eat and share here on Dessert Comes First.
If there’s someone you think should be at my next event, please tell me about them in the Comments form below. The more detailed you are, the more helpful it’ll be for me. Please include their names and contact information and if available, their website or fan page. And if you have a home-based food business and want to be part of my next event, then please tell me about yourself. I can’t guarantee anything but I’m truly grateful for your help, DCF readers. Thanks very much!

You’ve featured her before, but I still believe Imelda Go (and her business partner)are still tops in the home bakers/purveyors for the sweet and savory categories.

Hi Lori,
I suggest you sample those unforgettable mini cupcakes painstakingly handcrafted by Anita Li (of Baked by Anita fame) if you haven’t already. The bacon and maple, peanut butter-banana, and saffron and black salt cupcakes are TDF! 😀
They sold their cupcakes in Mercato, right? No exaggeration bu the bacon and maple is juuuuuuust awesssooooome!
Ivorie Acosta was a preschool teacher but is now focused on creating the most sinfully delicious cookies bars and cakes. I especially love her cookie cup variations!
To order please text: 0917-4226898 visit the official CookieBar site: http://www.ilovecookies.net/ ~ Ivorie Acosta
This is Ivorie’s updated website on FB with pics of her products http://www.facebook.com/COOKIEBARMANILA
You’ve featured my friend Marion Bernardo before. I can’t get over her Cream Cheese Cookies! Maybe you can include her in your party. She now also bakes cakes for a certain restaurant in Pque 🙂

Having a sweet tooth and being a serious foodie at the same time is a dangerous combination as it will lead you to the city’s nooks and crannies, virtual or not, to get the best desserts. So I am wondering if the highly regarded blogger have not come across GOURMET FINDS yet which have already been featured in several glossy magazines and even in other food blogs. For one her French Macarons are the city’s best (no exaggeration here) and her croissants (yes they’re not strictly dessert even if they’re stuffed with valrhona chocolates) are …. I will ramble on and on like one does after tasting authentic Parisian ingredients but should anyone be really interested, the Facebook website is GourmetFinds. That’s just how I order.
I must agree with Gourmet Finds. I sought them out when I read in a magazine that they make canneles.
Marco Abesamis is by far the only person I know who specializes on the best bagels! He’s really ought to change the image of this rather underdog bread in this pandesal saturated country. He has perfected new york style bagels which are to die for. Give it a try! You can visit his stall, Bakersville in Mercato or check his site at http://www.facebook.com/bakersville.ph
I’m absolutely loving this post! I’ve got my notebook and pen out — listing away all these great finds! Thanks, Lori! 😉
hi Lori..try this out
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Chef-To-Go/217530204962441
Hi, Lori! It was hard to think of purveyors you don’t already know, especially since I get most of my tips from you! Not sure if you recall, but I think I e-mailed you about Gourmet Finds (https://www.facebook.com/GourmetFinds) which makes Kouign Amann & cannelles. Pick-up is just at Forbes. If you like foie gras pate, try Carol Jorge’s — she has a few versions, like with XO or with mushrooms. And, although I’ve not tried it yet, I’ve been hearing very good things about Pinkerton ice cream (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pinkerton-Ice-Cream/212148148824895). It’s by order, pick up in San Juan. It’s also served at 2nds in the Fort, but just my luck, it had all run out when I ate there. 🙁 My friend loves their Red Velvet flavor, and I’m also dying to try the Carrot Cake, Honeycomb, Food for the Gods and Candied Maple Bacon! Pinkerton also has interesting sorbet flavors, like Guava Basil and Mango Basil. Uh-oh…have I aroused Ian’s ire by posting this? 😉
Hi Lori! My mom makes cashew tarts. She’s been making them for almost 20 years now. Here’s a link https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150245524231281.363528.589191280
Hi Lori, try Sophie’s Mom’s products too: sophiesmom.com
Try the mochi truffles and red velvet cupcakes. 🙂
here in Cavite, i order my sweet fix from two home bakers:
1) happy treats (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002368962026) – i like her oreo cheesecake bites
2) gingerella (http://gingerellasweetdelights.weebly.com) – she has this yema de oreo cake
You should try Symphony of Flavors Bakeshop’s Custard Cake and Leche Flan Cheesecake, they are simply amazing! 😀
At last, seomone comes up with the “right” answer!
I’m not sure if you’ve already featured her, Patricia Erika Fortunado of Bohemia Cakes and Pastries. She’s a really talented cake artist and has a keen eye for detail. She’s a home baker in Alabang, and she’s actually my classmate in high school. You can visit her website http://www.bohemiacakes.com.
