A short photo essay of last Saturday’s food writing workshop, Eat. Write. Love hosted by Writer’s Block Philippines.
- (L-R:) Niña, Ana, Nikka
Thanks to Writer’s Block (WB) founders, Nikka Sarthou, Niña Terol-Zialcita, and Ana Santos for inviting me to speak at WB’s first food writing workshop. I’m very selective when accepting speaking engagements but since Nikka and I were colleagues 10 years together at an online company, I couldn’t say no. It was a sold-out event and I had a lot of fun sharing my food writing experiences with those who attended.
- with Giney (left) and Beth (right)
It was my first time at Adarna Food and Culture, a restaurant that’s ardent in its celebration of Filipino food. I was very pleased to meet its chef, Giney Villar and her equally dynamic partner, Beth Angsioco. I hope to spend even more time talking to them when I go back to Adarna to eat everything on their menu. I especially want more of their Adobong Batangas and a pitcherful of that caramelo sauce that they glaze their banana peanut roll (aka turon) with.
- Here I am displaying the last slide in my presentation, which encapsulates what food writing is to me.
The best part about the workshop was meeting all of those who attended, several of whom are longtime readers of Dessert Comes First. I was quite overwhelmed that several of them wanted to have their photo taken with me. DCF readers are the best!
My favorite picture of all: all the people who made this event possible, and my sister Charley, (on the extreme right) my constant supporter and photographer-for-the-day.
I am truly sad that I missed this.
You gave a great talk Lori! 😀 congrats!
I agree, I want to go back to Adarna and eat everything on their menu. Haha. 🙂
It was nice to meet you Ms. Lori and your talk was so great! I appreciate food more now than before! Thanks 😀
Thank you, Lori. I have an ambivalent relationship with food and my kitchen. But you kinda made me see both in a different light. =)
Very nice post!
I’m so happy I braved the distance to see and hear you in person. You made blogging an outlet for creativity, be it about food, photography, travel or all combined. I’m so revved up to keep on blogging.
Thank you,

Congratulations Lori! 🙂 I hope you’ll do another talk next time… Would definitely love to attend!
it was such a pleasure to finally meet you lori! I bought 2 of the three books you recommended the man who ate everything and the making of a chef. Just to clarify, is the book from herbst the food lovers tiptionary or the new food lover’s companion? 🙂
It probably wasn’t the primarly focus of the workshop, but I do hope you touched upon the importance of proofreading and of the technical aspect of writing. There is at least one widely-read Filipino blog that suffers from very poor technical writing–simple errors in noun-verb agreement, lexical errors, etc. are commonly found in every blog post of this particular blogger. These errors may be merely because of poor proofreading/editing, but they may also be because the writer just does not have the English skills to be writing in English. Not only does it give a poor overall impression of the blog (it looks very unprofessional), but also of the education of that blogger, a university graduate, no less! It makes outsiders think universities in the Philippines must be very poor at educating, indeed.
waaaaaahhh! That’s me in the fan picture!!!! Hahahaha 🙂 So kilig to have met and chatted with you!!! Waaaaahhhh!
Congratulations Lori! Looking good!
Ms. Lori, you look like Miriam Quiambao in the pictures 😀
Sadly, I’ve missed this 🙁
My darling Lorie – you know I am a big fan of you, etc., etc. But how excited am I to see Charley on your blog?? Yay, Charley!!
XOXO
Kim
Oops – I meant to write “Loripie.” 🙂
Thanks Lori for the little mention, I really enjoyed your talk. And a big HI to Kim!! 🙂 Hugs
Hi Lori!! Indeed, your talk was very interesting! Nice to know your history as a writer! Funny too that you said you were nervous. Hindi naman halata! Great also to have met my fellow Lori “fans/stalkers”, haha! BOW kami lahat sa iyo!
By the way, I loved your earrings and Charley’s necklace.
As to the comment from Rona Y – well maybe there should be a part 2 to discuss the technical aspect. How about that Nikka, Nina and Ana??
Cheers!
I so love your site and it just inspired me to write about the food I eat…Though I am not confident about my writing skills, I think that through your posts I learn more about food-writing…:)
