Sugar Series December 2008: Delicious as Only Dèlize Does It (last dessert of this series, and the last post for 2008)

My Sugar Series (December 2008) is made up of desserts that I’ve enjoyed recently. Because the holidays spell sweet excess, impress the people you love with any of the following desserts. They’re guaranteed to make an impression on them as they did on me. Other desserts in this series: Ann Puno's Choc-Nut cake "Nutter" About Peanut Butter A “Fruitcake” To Fall In Love With Pleasure for Plaisir San Lo's Famous... My 2 Favorite Cakes This Christmas Hazelnuts and Lemons At the FOOD and Foodie (magazines) Christmas party, Jill Sandique’s ever-famous pistachio sansrival graces the table. Naturally, I’ve positioned myself right in front of it so that I can continuously pick at it throughout the meal. My co-workers, who know my yen for dessert only too well, pretend not to notice as the pastry begins to disappear slowly even before dinner is over.

I named Cristina Santiago-Rivera’s Chocolata and Strawberry Charlotte two of Manila’s Best Desserts 2007. If I had a list for 2008, her two new cakes would’ve made the list again. She strikes me as a person who understands that [a] dessert is a carefully orchestrated sequence of taste sensations and surprises, pleasures that pique and surprise the palate. Such understanding propels her creativity and produces a new magnum opus times two.

Hazelnuts and Lemons Delicious as Only Dèlize Does It NOTE: This series ends on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008. Len (Elaine) Lo is one baker who never forgets about me. She makes a birthday cake for me every February and she sends me samples of her new creations at least twice a year. This year, she made me a cake with my name on it. Incredible! (Couldn’t resist making it this post’s cover photo!) Another time, she even gave me little note cards with my name on it – a gift I love because I love stationery. And she’s been to all but one of my Dessert Comes First events. To me, she’s a treasure and a friend. That’s why I couldn’t have been happier for Len when she told me about her newest venture.

Her name is Ana and she owns San Lo’s Famous Empanadas and Tortas and yes, she lives in San Lo (San Lorenzo Village) -- now you see the “connect.” I have a post on Ana’s flagship products written three years ago; and I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t tasted them again since then.
