A Meal So Good It’s Up There On The Astral Plane

In my Great Photos of Great Dishes post, I included a dish from Astralis, their Parisian scrambled eggs with foie gras (P480). It’s part of a meal that I have there that still resonates in my memory even a month later.

In The Interim…

I've just returned from a weekend trip out of town. Am sorting through photos and stuff, so until my next post (not too long now, I promise!) check out some of the photos from my event at Starbucks last Oct. 18. Yes, it's a bit "after the thought" but frankly, I wasn't going to put them up until people started asking to see photos. So, here they are! Click on this link to get to the Gallery. All event photos taken by Aldwin Aspillera.

Ice Cream as Love Potion

Click here to see the Peninsula Manila's new Ice Cream Menu. I’m living proof of the sugary power that the Peninsula Manila’s Lobby has on couples. On our first date, I directed my Bin there after Dean St. Café (god, remember that place!) proved too crowded. I insisted that we order the Choco Loco and on his first bite, my Bin was hooked – both on the ice cream and on me. Hee hee. Ironically enough, after 11 years of marriage, we have yet to go back there but now is the time to make newer, sweeter memories. The Peninsula Manila has unveiled its new dessert menu for The Lobby. A collaboration with Unilever Foodsolutions and Selecta ice cream, this trio’s tour de force has resulted in new ice cream concoctions that have been revitalized with demonstrable fluency and fervor. nutty pageboy Selecta’s ravishing roster of flavors is the malleable canvas on which Peninsula Executive Chef Adam Mathis and his team unleash their edible handiwork. Some of the new creations include The Nutty Pageboy (P300++), where scoops of super chocolate ...

Great Photos of Great Dishes (Non-Dessert)

In the course of a year, my computer’s hard drive accumulates quite a number of food photos; so much so that there are times when I imagine that an internal rupture is imminent, and the next time I turn my computer on, it’ll spew forth a salvo of disjointed images. Ah, such is the imagination (and computer contents) of a food writer. Lately, I haven’t been up to the task of describing my various restaurant experiences online or otherwise. A spate of print commitments has left me lagging far behind on blog duty and as I sit here typing, I feel a bit ruptured myself – metaphorically speaking, of course – my creativity seeping out wastefully into a puddle on the floor. Eek, quite the imagery, yes? When I turn on the computer today, I turn to my food photos hoping that inspiration will strike. The ones that I include here are those that do, they hearten me and imbue my sagging writer’s spirit with remembrances of good meals past and excitement for those to come. After all, eating is the leitmotif, if you will, of my food writer-life, and food is what I ...

Sweet Pampanga

My sisters and I grew up going to Pampanga -- my mom is from there and we would visit my lolo every weekend. Little did I (we!) know that the then-quiet, mall-less city would bloom into a culinary destination -- or has it always been and I was the one who became more aware? Well ok, Capampangans are generally known to be the best cooks in the country so it was inevitable that Pampanga would soon boast of a plethora of dining establishments. Here are a few of my favorites.
