I agree, seeing things we take for granted with fresh eyes makes us appreciate it so much more. And I'm glad you've finally tasted Alamid -- it makes you forget how it's harvested, doesn't it?

What a coincidence -- the first time I saw lard was in Baguio, too, way back in the 90s! I went up with friends, and the one assigned to buy groceries said she couldn't find regular cooking oil, that lard was all they had. It wasn't good in spaghetti, let me tell you -- we had to eat quickly, because in the cold weather, the fat quickly solidified on our plates! The funniest part was, the guy who was assigned to do the dishes afterwards had a devil of a time trying to wash the grease off...it turned out he'd mistaken the bar of lard for soap! :-D

Oh so timely! I just came across Kape Alamid a week ago at P250/cup. It's good to know that growers in the Mountain Province are catching up with the niche market. I know you love Indonesia too but I was hoping we'd give Kopi Luwak a run for their money. Lori, would you happen to know if they are using wild civets or those kept at the farm?

This was an AWESOME post. Believe it or not, I've never had Camote-Q (I was never much of a snacker as a kid) and although I have visited Baguio Market several times, I never knew about Alamid coffee until now. I love how you found and highlighted cool things that are uniquely *ours*. I've had it up to here with certain bloggers who do nothing but complain about this country ;)

And to think I turned down a trip to Baguio a few months ago since I thought it was boring. Now I HAVE to go again soon....
