Buns Are Better With Chocolate
If it’s true that adding chocolate makes any food better, then this has to be the ultimate in coffee buns. Roti Mum, Manila’s premier coffee bun purveyor has just come out with their – chocoholics, hold your breath – chocolate buns.
Layers of dough fragrant with that middle pocket of butter are still there, as is the characteristic crispy outer crust that coffee bun devotees believe is a coffee bun’s reason for being. What changes though is the chocolate bun’s color – it’s obviously a darker brown, more “hot cocoa” brown than the golden brown of the original coffee bun.
And the chocolate flavor? Taking off from the success of their original coffee buns, Roti Mum’s chocolate buns are also a revelation unto themselves. Unlike the customary chocolate hit that comes with anything chocolaty, this bun is a study in subtlety. Instead of a chocolate that confuses with its overlapping undertones of smoke and fruit and spice and what else have you, Roti Mum’s chocolate bun is a shy little chocolate thing. Bashfully offering just a linear chocolate flavor, it’s straight and subtle at the same time, like lips brushing your cheek instead of an outright smooch. Sometimes the understated is unmistakable.
These chocolate buns also herald Roti Mum’s brand-spanking-new boxes made by Scala. The boxes are awesome in orange, with tiny corner vents to allow for what I like to call “aroma ventilation.”
All good things come to an end, however. As Roti Mum co-owner Emil Sitjar tells me, “[The chocolate buns] will be available only during the Christmas season. We made them available beginning last Saturday (November 17), and based on our 4-day sales, we hope to still have them by December 25.”
Sounds like you’d better get there ASAP.

Lori, they also have an outlet at The Block, SM North.
I saw these last night, but because I am on a diet (boo hoo), I resisted. Now I am regretting it big time. Must go back.

hmm… i tried making chocolate buns last summer same time i experimented with coffee buns from a recipe i found online. the chocolate is nicely enhanced by a touch of cinnamon powder in the mix (and strawberry butter in the middle!). my problem then was that the coatings tend to get a tad sticky and “uncrispy” after a few hours.
i’ve not been to megamall in a while…maybe it’s time to make the trip. thanks for the headsup!

oh i love coffee buns, i’ve been wanting to try roti mum’s but their location is kinda far from my place, so i’d always buy from delifrance nalang. i hope roti mum will have a branch in makati na.
if i get a chance to dropby megamall, ill definitely try these buns.. both the coffee and chocolate buns
this is makin’ me hungrrrry!

I’ve been wanting to try Roti Mum’s coffee buns ever since they opened, but I am so rarely in Megamall. Apart from the distance, the crowd and parking difficulty are daunting. But now, you have tempted me to brave Megamall in the *Christmas season*!!!
Hmm…Podium is near Megamall, isn’t it? I could make the trip and hassle worth it by going to both Roti Mum AND Sebastian’s! Ayayay…it isn’t even December, and already the holiday feasting has started!

I love the mug.=)

tried the buns this past saturday. you’re right, the aroma is wonderful, but the flavor is wanting. i think i still prefer kopi roti’s. the chocolate crust at roti mum’s, same as their coffee crust, is too crumbly and dry. the butter center is also a tad too strong and salty.

coffee buns and a steaming cup of tablea tsokolate or kapeng barako with condensed milk is my idea of the ultimate comfort food on a cold december afternoon. yum!

Hi Lori,
Great website! This is a completely off-topic question so I hope you don’t mind. Where did you get that mug in the picture? That would make a lovely present for my chocoholic friends.
Thanks.

Roti Mum fails in comparison to Roti Boy of Malaysia.
Michell’s of Pampanga also offers Roti Bun at 24 pesos only. A steal considering it tastes way better than Roti Mum. Their locations are a bit far though: SM Pampanga, Clark, SM Marilao to name a few.
