Waduh! This article has made me so very hungry. I also lived in Indonesia (albeit Surabaya) from age 7 to 13. When I returned some years ago after nearly 20 years away, I could hardly believe how much I felt like it was my homecoming. Indonesian foods and culture formed powerful bonds with who I am and nothing but being there and smelling the clove cigarette smoke and mosquito coils burning in the evenings brings those things back. Martabak at night...not to be missed!

Hi Lori!

Been here in Jakarta for 6 yrs now, and I surely agree with some of your thoughts about Indonesian cuisine.

My faves are also martabak, sate ayam (esp the peanut sauce), nasi kuning, pisang goreng and the home-made version of beef rendang. As for desserts, I love their alpukat juice but am not so fond of their es teler. That's why I miss our halo-halo. Good thing Chow King opened a branch here (though am not sure if they're still around).

thanks for this very informative blog.
btw, why did it took you 20 yrs to return here?

Like you, I find Jakarta street food more interesting. Your Jakarta posts made me want to go back even more and have the martabak telor, ikan bakar and sop buntut among other things....ohhh the smells of Jakarta....I miss it.

Like everyone else who has ever lived in Indonesia, your Indo series opened a flood of wonderful culinary memories for me! I'll never forget my daily dose of alpukat es teler (from a fave food hangout at Pasar Baru)...yum! And waiting for the street vendor to roll by with his rickety cart of steaming hot bakmi bakso was one of the highlights of living in Indonesia, where streetfoods (at least to my mind) provided the ultimate in eating enjoyment. One thing that I also really loved was this spicy crunchy snack I knew only as KRIPIK. We (my classmates and I) bought it in little plastics near our school (was in grade 11 & 12 when I was there) and the closest I can come to describing it is some sort of crispy fried kamote smothered in chili/chili oil. I never could find this anywhere else. If you know where I can buy this snack, or know of anyone who can help me get a hold of a recipe for kripik, please let me know. I'm soooo longing for the burn-in-the-mouth taste of the chili followed by the sweetish kamote that I remember from my youth. Thanks for your wonderful articles, keep them coming!
