I Dream of Krispy Kreme
Wed, November15th of 2006
10:30 pm
I have to pinch myself: today I’m given two dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts to enjoy. With the imminent opening of the very first Krispy Kreme store in Manila on November 30, free samples of these precious rings of dough have become a hot, hot, HOT commodity. While I don’t plan on joining the manic crowd that will camp out at the City Center in Taguig the night before the big day, I’m just as giddy as everyone else that Krispy Kreme is finally here. YAY!
Now, I am by nature, greedy when it comes to food. And having doughnuts around is making me nervous. I have absolutely no doubt that I can inhale all 24 of them if given a chance, I kid you not. But I just don’t want to have to suffer for it at the gym tomorrow. Luckily, my sister Tricia chooses that exact minute to waltz into my house, as if obeying the siren song of Krispy Kreme. She flips open a box and grabs a glazed disc. As her teeth sink down into the dough, her eyebrows shoot up and her eyeballs roll back into her head. “It’s just like the States,” she says, nodding slowly, thoughtfully, with each bite. Tricia is one of the pickiest people I know when it comes to food so her sign of approval is a very good thing.
My Bin has a similar reaction when he comes home a few hours later. He takes two doughnuts: one he eats as is at room temperature; the other, he microwaves for exactly eight seconds at full power. While he falls in love at first bite with the room-temp doughnut, it’s the one that’s spent some down time in the microwave that he positively swoons to the floor for. A few choice expletives rush out of his mouth for emphasis, as his regular vocabulary fails him while in the grip of such a deliciously mind-numbing state.
Such is the power of the Krispy Kreme doughnut. I eat it to enjoy it: they’re a state of mind until I down a few of them, and then they become a state of delectable mindlessness. The pillow of dough engulfs my teeth, shattering the almost-translucent glaze. I stop to brush bits of it from my lips. If heated, the glaze melts into a sticky gloss, collapsing upon the doughnut, surrendering to the heat of mouth and tongue. Chewing is hardly a necessity — air needs no aid. I lick my fingers, I taste vanilla and sweet, sweet sugar. May this dream never end.

Many, many thanks to Blooey Singson of PRESS Inc., Krispy Kreme’s PR consultancy, for making my Krispy Kreme dreams come true.

I’m a little confused where City Center is. Is that behind Serendra? Last Monday we did see a Krispy Kreme truck in the back of Serendra (the side nearer restaurants like Portico)

No WONDER you’ve been so quiet lately. Tsk tsk tsk. Heheheh
P30 for a donut?!? That’s about as outrageous as P75 for an ice cream cone! It will be interesting to see how they fare long-term once the initial buzz settles down.
And even more interesting to see how their local counterparts Like Gonuts Donuts, Hot Loops, Cello’s et al will react/be affected by the entry of this major player.
The winners in all of this of course, are us! Woohoo!

Hi Lori! I also got a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts! It’s heaven in a box! I was gorging on them at 10′o clock at night (I hope my trainer never finds out) You described the doughnut, and the feeling of eating one, perfectly… I was actually strategizing earlier today (while on the treadmill, mind you) on when would be the best time to line up to be the first customer (and win the year’s supply of doughnuts!)

They looked very nice in the light of your photos. I won’t be camping out for any donuts, but will enjoy having one when the crowds die down. Hot cup of coffee and a donut…

they sure know the power of blogs, our foodie blog got a box of donuts too! glazed chocolate cake! very very yummy. a bit pricey for 38 bucks but then that could be a good thing, you won’t be able to afford being a glutton.

The KK folks are flooding their target market with donuts! We had a colleague walk in with two boxes of free donuts. Needless to say, they were gone in seconds.

is that the fattening of metro manilans i hear? i would prolly agree with mila in letting the crowds die out first before enjoying one though. not too big a donut fan. you know how they make the donuts so soft by the way? i hear they mix in some potato flour to make it spongy and moist. prolly just one of the many trade secrets.

Hi Lori,
I’ve visited your blog a couple of times and I really enjoy it…
What made me “fall in love” with your style of writing is the food description and above all the posts about Paris.
I myself live in Paris and have been for the last 12 years, though I am originally Swedish.
I’ll be in a bit more often to “taste” your blog. Wonderful!!

Welcome home Lori! So you’ve retired your trusty point and shoot digicam. I must say it really served you well. It took fabulous shots! With only available light I might add. So what new camera did you end up getting? For the Krispy Kreme fans, City Center is the area behind the Serendra section that’s filled with restos now. So if you’re in Portico or Mezzaluna, cross the street. City Center is that busy area of construction across the street. It will be a pedestrian mall area. Aside from Krispy Kreme, Fully Booked will be there too (but in a few months still) – heard it’ll be huge, 5 floors!

unfortunately, i’m not a big krispy kreme fan. they opened 2 stores here in HK last Nov. and i don’t see any lines snaking past the door… too sweet for the chinese tooth i believe.
in any case, KK should get you to do their ads. i might not like its too-sweet taste, but you sure make it look (and sound) like a little piece of heaven at the Fort. when do we get to see you here in HK? Paris is now my lunch group’s city of choice, if only because of your hot chocolate blog. if only we could live and eat there and not worry about making a living or learning the language…sigh

speaking as someone who used to handcarry 2 boxes of the doughnuts from LA only to have them all soggied up on arrival in MNL, i have to say that Go Nuts made a good replacement for KK.
of course now that KK is here, we can finally compare!

I live in Winston-Salem, where KK was founded. I have grown up eating them (and you can tell it by looking at me. Ha.)
Not long ago on my dinner break (I work at night) I was hungry but couldn’t decide what to eat. I was driving down Stratford Road and KK had it’s Hot Doughnuts Now sign on. OH GOSH. (It’s close to the original bldg, beside where it stood, the original was torn down. I KNOW). I ate three HOT glazed donuts for dinner. Horrible, I know. But I can’t help it when I see that sign.
You have to have them hot at the store. You MUST.

Finally, got the chance to taste the talk of the town doughnut during our school homecoming. Don’t know how it landed in the buffet table but nevertheless, didnt let the opportunity passed me by. I can only say “WOW” far different from the local doughnut here. Cant wait for the big opening. =)
