A gift for the cookbook lover in your life

If you’ve got someone on your Christmas list who’s as obsessed with cookbooks as I am, you might want to consider giving them this.
Hot off the press, it’s Kitchen Rescue by Chef Reggie Aspiras. Subtitled “Excerpts from the Philippine Daily Inquirer and then some…”, it’s a compilation of Aspiras’ columns from February 2003 – July 2004.
The book is the debut publication by Emerald Holdings, Corp., the mother company of magazine distributor, Emerald Headway. I’m quite impressed with their debut into the world of publishing – the book is printed on glossy paper, and the text inside is a visual feast with varying font sizes and colors for emphasis. It’s a departure from the usual newsprint paperback that most local cookbooks are printed on, and thank God for that. Hmm, I hope they’d consider publishing my book when it’s ready. Heheh.
I follow Aspiras’ column which comes out on Thursdays (food day for most local dailies!), so I’ve actually clipped out most of the material already in the book. Still, the book appeals to my more neurotic neat-freak since it’s nice to have all the columns bound together in one neat package.
I’ve been recommending this book to people who email me asking for where to buy baking ingredients There are also some terrific recipes here which I’ve tried like the banana cake and the old-fashioned chocolate cake. There’s a handy index of recipes for quick referencing as well as a directory of food and wine suppliers.
The future of Philippine cookbooks looks bright.

It’s your childhood BF from San Diego…speaking of Christmas gifts, what would you like from the U.S., my dear? Food-related of course! Just make sure it’s small enough to carry in a medium-sized suitcase!
Love,
Katrina’s mama

I’d love to get a book written by you, probably some sweet dessert compilation, or a collection of essays exulting in the joys of cooking.

I read about this in the paper and was thinking of getting a copy for myself. =)
I enjoy reading (well-written) local cookbooks because they feature recipes relevant to the Filipino consumers … using ingredients easily available here (no more … “how does that fish/vegetable/meat translate into Filipino?”).

As an increasingly visually impaired blog fan of Lori, where’s that bifocles of mine?, I appreciate the Times Roman font. I understand it is the standard font on most computers and digital printers and is widely used due to its readability. I’ve had some difficulty with other stylized blogs where I could hardly read/see anything. Lori’s is just right for me.
Keep on blogging, Lori. Much appreciated.

Kitchen Rescue will probably be available in Cebu in the first quarter of this year. I know it takes a long time. It’s widely available here in Manila, so if you really want it, maybe I can ship a copy to you. Email me.

Hi Lori,
Thanks! Was wondering if it was really available. Tried buying it thru National Bookstore website but it’s not posted. Anyway, thanks a lot. My husband will be going next week. Will ask him to get it for me.
