Sweet on Salty: Royce’ Chocolate-Covered Potato Chips

It seems that I have a chocolate godsister who plies me with chocolate and keeps my sugar coffers a-brimming. Aside from those who know that I know her, she will forever remain nameless in this blog, for obvious reasons. She’s the one who gave me the Royce’ milk chocolates which I featured a few weeks ago. On a recent trip to Italy, she gave me some chocolates as well. How I love her.
Several of the comments that I received in the above post mentioned Royce’ chocolate-covered potato chips. And guess what my chocolate godsister (bless her sweet, sweet heart!) gave me next?
You got it: Royce’ chocolate-covered potato chips.
Labeled as Royce’ Potato Chips Chocolate, this unique treat comes in a large plastic bag, its top sealed firmly. Wrapper instructions behoove the eater to store the bon bons under 25°C, if there are any left to store, that is.
Once the bag was open, I buried my nose into its inner depths and breathed in a deep bouquet of chocolate and salt. Transporting. Sweet and salty is a flavor combination that’s been used with much success in European and American confections and desserts – think salty caramel candies and chocolate cookies sprinkled with fleur de del, even sweet and salty sampaloc (tamarind). Taste buds on the tip of the tongue detect sugar, while the side taste buds detect salt. This tasty tandem of salty and sweet is demure yet flirtatious, a librarian in red stilettos.
Only one side is covered in chocolate — tell me, how do they do that?! The potato chip itself is ridged, all the better for the chocolate to ooze its way down and harden into a thick glossy coat. Once its smell overwhelms my senses, I am powerless as if in a spell. I take a bite: crrrunch! a jolt of salt, then my tongue is immersed in the coolness of light chocolate.
I better hide this bag from my Bin.

Deep fried potatoes on rich rich chocolate. Oh wow, all the bad bad BAD beautiful things to eat.
An exchange intern had the same reaction to the Pinoy cheese ice cream. She said, “You guys put cheese?! In your ice cream.?” But she loved it.
The kick in contrast reels you in. Like…chocolate covered salted pretzels. Somebody stop me already!

That looks incredible! And, not *that* hard to make, maybe? I have to try… maybe melt a mixture of dark and milk chocolate with a little butter, and brush it onto thick potato chips? Aaaaah.

Chocolate covered potato chips? I never would have been able to think that one up myself … now I’m feeling inspired to cook some up on my own. =)
Chocolate is actually good with pretty much anything. I was in Circles the other day and was pouring chocolate from their chocolate fountain on my roti canai. And I love chocolate covered coffee beans …

You’re incredibly lucky to have such a generous chocolate godsister! Like many women I know, I like to eat potato chips together with small chocolates like M&Ms or Kisses (perfect size for alternating with the chips). So ever since I heard of chocolate covered potato chips in a TV show all about potato chips, I’ve been searching for them. Hmm…who do I know in HongKong who owes me a favor?

When I went to HK a few weeks ago, I bought a bag of those chips for Chrissie. Unfortunately, she has yet to try them (and share them with me).

Nasty stuff…I like!!!
Oh Lori, I think I’m gaining far too much weight than I should have in my little pregnant gig. But I’m having too much fun eating to stop! And so I always say: Eat for Taste, Eat for Taste.
I’d definitely love to taste this!

Your blog rocks! I absolutely love it and so I now join what seems to be your legions of fans:)! Teehee:), am lucky that we currently live in Singapore, so yes, I have spent a small fortune at Royce.
For meekerz,
you can check out the recipe from Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa). Her web recipe posts change but it is in one of her books.

Chocolate covered potato chips…reminds me of what the fairy godmother said in Shrek, after he trashed her factory. “Somebody bring me something deep fried and smothered in chocolate!”

I just made some choc covered potato chips tonight! All you have to do is get the milk choc melt wafers (at any Rag Shop, Michaels, or A.C. Moore) and melt them in the microwave. Then use the ridged potato chips and just dip them in about half-way and place on waxed paper. A little labor intensive, but a fun treat for close family or friends. (I don’t have the patience to do it for just anyone that I’m making Christmas cookies for!)

@meekerz, a recipe that recently popped up on my email mentioned dipping the chip in tempered chocolate with a truffle fork.
I’m gonna get myself a bag of Ruffles and try this with Valrhona dark chocolate. (Found a bar at Cook’s Exchange.)
