It’s hip to be square

I have Midge to thank for this topic. She’s a regular reader to my blog, and I to hers. I admire Midge’s uncanny ability to sniff out the most precious grocery finds, one of which I’m featuring today.
Ritter Sport chocolate is nothing new to me – I’ve been eating these large 100-gram squares of chocolate sin for a few years now. Since each flavor has a corresponding packaging color, it’s easy to just grab one and go.
I never paid attention to the fact that the pack is re-sealable; when I’m busy scarfing down my chocolate, there isn’t much that will divert my attention. Besides, once that pack is ripped open, the only time it gets closed again is when I ball up the (empty) wrapper to toss it in the trash. I also never knew that these chocolates were meant to recharge athletes, however I do recall thinking that ‘Sport’ was a strange word to append to chocolate. My favorite Ritter Sport variant is Hazelnut because I love hazelnut anything, especially if it’s with milk chocolate.
I have to restrain myself from buying more than two Ritter Sports at a time, otherwise I find myself at their mercy during some late, unguarded hour. I was thrilled to learn from Midge’s blog that these chocolate squares from Germany now come in little minis: either more for me or more to share, depending on my mood. Hee hee.
Out of the 18 different Ritter Sport variants, seven are included in the mini packs: crispy (corn) flakes, butter biscuit, hazelnut, praliné (nougat with hazelnuts and loads of milk chocolate), marzipan, nougat, and two each of the milk chocolate and yogurt.
Just in case you’re one of those OC (obsessive-compulsive) types who notices everything, yes, there are only eight squares pictured. One square had to miss the photo shoot because it was accosted by my Bin and the little Boo. Told ya they were good.

I love the mini sizes for snacking. They’re perfect for a lunch or purse. I’ve always been partial to the butter biscuit ones, myself.

I’m not a fan of chocolates but after seeing your pictures and the way you described this… I think, I might change my mind

Yeah, I first picked some up when I was in Germany at a supermarket checkout. The packaging is deceiving. I love how unassuming it is. It looks pretty standard and mass produced. Would have stayed clear of them back home in North America, but I thought, this Germany… they’re good at chocolates right? … what the heck. Man was I right, they’re so good!
Thanks for the history, I too wondered about the “Sport” bit. Adds a little bit of appreciation to the experience.
