Banana cue

The title above looks funny – a bit like “Cue the banana, he’ll be onstage in 5 minutes!” Heh. Personally, I prefer spelling it banana q – gives it character, no?

Anyway, banana cue is simply saba (cooking banana, similar to plaintains), rolled in brown sugar and then deep fried. The hot oil caramelizes the sugar, giving the banana cue an ooey-gooey, (careful not to bite into it while it’s still hot!) crunchy quality. This banana fritter of sorts, is often sold on the street as an afternoon snack and of course, made at home. I love it. It’s one of those foods that brings me back to my childhood. And something that Boo will remember when she’s grown up.

Boo is SO cute. I like banana q but I prefer turon (probably because I can have with cheese rolled in the middle).

I afraid that like mel, I also like turon better, but with a slice of langka. I’ll probably have banana cue once in a while, but it’s just a little too sweet for me.

Boo is really, really cute.

I just got back from visiting Manila last week with my girlfriend who is filipino. It was my first time there and I LOVED the food. So i decided to create my own blog about my journey to Manila and because we both love food so much also about the food we ate and encountered but your blog is so much better!!! I love your food pictures. I’m upset because I didnt get to try banana q but did love Turon very much. I even tried to replicate it here in Melbourne this last weekend. Have a look at my blog and tell me what you think.

I haven’t been back to the Philippines in 6 years but every time I go, I head strait for a Banana Q street vendor. Those pictures are making me very hungry and I’m almost ready to buy a $1200 plane ticket to get my mouth on one!
