Hello Lori,

I'm Indonesian and I just wanted to let you know that usually, before we fry tempe, we soak it in water with garlic, salt, pepper and a lot of coriander. The same with Tofu (Indonesian style tofu, not japanese silk tofu).
soak it for an hour or two, if you dont have time, then boil it for 15 to 20 minutes so that all the garlic and coriander flavor will set in the tempe and tofu, then deep fry it.
Another trick is that after soaking or boiling, put some flour in a place and cover the tempe and tofu with the flour then fry it, that's my favorite way to make tempe and tahu goreng. :)

I was very dubious about tempeh at first, but I think I tamed it. I'd love to have it in Indonesia though..
(my approach will make you laugh ;) http://easydoesitrecipes.blogspot.com/2008/11/pineapple-tempeh.html it was a very evil beast to me at first!!!)

i find it tastes better if you soak it in water (for an hour or two) with crushed garlic & a pinch of salt before deep frying them.

Okay, hindi ko na matake!
Off-topic, Ms. Lori, but I've been itching to know how you keep so fit despite most of the food you feature here being the stuff health nuts consider the bane of a bad diet.
I mean, come on. You can eat ice cream sandwiched between two cookies and still look the way you do!
What gives?

Hello Lori!

I just found this post last week. Suffice it to say I did a marathon reading of your archives and enjoyed your posts.

I must admit though that health reasons limit my intake of sweets (but I sneak in a slice, scoop, forkful and cupsful (oops, hehehe!!!) once in a while. Especially when I get the urge to bake stuff.

I hope there will be another food writing workshop so I can attend. I found out about the latest one too late.

Here's looking forward to more posts! Hopefully I get to meet you one day.

Cheers!

hi ms. lori. just want to ask if you've heard of news relating soy products and thyroid cancer and other thyroid problems? it says on emails that i've received that soy has been the culprit on women having thyroid cancer. i got scared because my family and i are avid soy consumers. thank you.

hi lori!

have you ever tried natto (japanese fermented soybeans)? It might taste the same as tempeh, but it only has one texture (slimy!). I hear its available in most japanese groceries - japanese people love em for beakfast (and because it is also extremely healthy).
